Housedean Farm Campsite

Camping is all about simple pleasures, and there are few like an open air hot shower on a beautiful dewy morning, just one of those unique experiences that sites like Housedean Farm provide. Set on a working farm, the site sits in a sloping field bordered by poppy flecked corn fields and gently rolling hills. There is ample space for its pitches, or you could stay in the original South Downs shepherd's hut, equipped with a double bed and wood burning stove. Happily campfires are allowed, and there's a genuinely lovely little shop and coffee stop at reception that guests rave about, serving good coffee and fresh pastries in the morning, with the excellent Park Farm Shop a mile and a half away for local produce.

The site is located in the eastern end of the South Downs National Park, making it popular with walkers and cyclists tackling the South Downs Way, which runs right by. Famous local sights include Ditchling Beacon, Devil's Dyke and Drusillas Park (all the D's). With its location just off the A27 between Lewes and Brighton, the site couldn't be easier to reach by car, bus or train.

The one thing to know is the A27: some will be bothered by the hum of the road, which carries until late, though most find it fades once you're settled and a pair of earplugs sorts the rest. You can even make a virtue of it, turning your trip into an alternative 'city' break that combines the very best of town and country.
