Get Away Hide Away

Two converted horse lorries in an off-grid Norfolk hamlet, each with its own firepit, wood burner, and composting loo, properly private, genuinely small.

Get Away Hide Away is two units, not twenty. Douglas and Dixie are converted wooden horse lorries sited in the hamlet of Elsing, mid-Norfolk, on an off-grid smallholding that runs on sustainable principles and makes a genuine effort at wildlife habitat. The wildflower meadow, the deer, the badgers, the owls at dusk: these aren't marketing bullet points, they're the reason the place exists.

Each lorry has its own composting toilet, shower, firepit and BBQ decking, and wood burner, there's no shared facilities block because there's no one to share with. You have the unit and its surroundings to yourself. Reviews consistently pick out the height of the lorries, the craftwork of the fittings, and the quality of the hot water, though the standout detail is simpler: sky views from the shower and the composting loo, through the seasons.

Dereham is the nearest town, with village shops and country pubs a short drive away in any direction. The site emphasises walking country, and the unhurried pace of a mid-Norfolk countryside that most people pass through rather than stop in.

A passion project in the best sense: two beautifully made lorry conversions on an off-grid wildlife plot, built for people who want private and quiet over numerous and convenient.
