Eco Camping Wales
A family-run eco campsite in the heart of the upper Swansea valleys, with valley views, compost loos, and a pub at the gate.
Eco Camping Wales has been part of this corner of the Brecon Beacons since 1968, a proper family operation where the owners live on site and the compost toilets are genuinely well-kept. The pitch is in a broad valley meadow, and the views across the hills earn the drive in.
The site takes tents, caravans, and motorhomes, all of them sharing the same meadow and the same uncomplicated approach. Fires are welcome, the skies out here are dark enough to make a fire-and-stars evening feel like the whole point of the trip, and the pub sits right at the entrance to the site. Showers and toilets are clean; bring water just in case during a busy weekend.
Dogs are welcome, school groups book in for outdoor education, and the walking access into the Beacons is direct. The eco ethos runs through the operation without being preachy about it, no bins on site means you carry out what you bring in, which keeps the place feeling genuinely wild rather than managed.
Before you book
- The water supply can run short during busy weekends, worth bringing a small reserve if the forecast looks popular.
- No on-site bins: the leave-no-trace policy means you take your rubbish home.
“One of the straightforward, honest ones: a valley meadow in the Brecon Beacons, owner-run for over fifty years, with dark skies, a pub at the gate, and no performance about it.”
Why it made the cut
- Continuous family ownership since 1968, the kind of longevity that only comes from a site people keep returning to
- Valley views and genuinely dark skies make the location the draw, not the facilities
- Pub directly at the entrance saves the usual evening logistics
- Eco ethos is baked in rather than bolted on, compost loos, carry-out waste, site feels wilder for it
