Denny Wood

Ancient New Forest woodland campsite where the ponies wander between the tents and the only facilities are a water tap and waste point.

Denny Wood is run by Forestry England as part of the New Forest camping estate, and it does one thing with conviction: put you in old-growth woodland with minimal infrastructure between you and it. Pitches are separated by oaks, ferns and fallen timber rather than rope or hedge, which gives the site an open, unmanaged feel that most campsites spend decades trying to imitate.

New Forest ponies roam freely across the site. They will investigate your kit, stand between you and the loos that don't exist, and leave at their own pace. This is either the whole appeal or a warning, depending on the kind of camper you are. Cycling routes run directly from the campsite into the forest, and you can reach Lyndhurst on off-road tracks without touching a road.

Facilities are strictly limited: drinking water and grey waste and chemical toilet disposal points on site, nothing else. You bring your own toilet. The season runs late May to early September, and the site takes tents, caravans and motorhomes. The on-site team, based at reception with a small shop, are warmly regarded. Dogs are not permitted on Denny Wood itself, though the adjacent Matley Wood site does allow them.

Before you book

  • You must bring your own chemical toilet, there are no loos or showers on site.
  • No dogs allowed on Denny Wood (dogs are welcome at adjacent Matley Wood).
  • Gates lock at 10pm.
As close to wild camping as you can get with a car beside you: ancient woodland, free-roaming ponies, and the New Forest doing the rest.
