Bayview Campsite
A family-run site right on Talmine Bay in remote Sutherland, where the beach is the back garden and the Milky Way is the ceiling.
Bayview sits on the shore of Talmine Bay on Scotland's far north coast, a short detour off the North Coast 500 in Sutherland. The pitches look straight out to sea, Ben Loyal and Ben Hope stand on the landward horizon, and the nearest significant town is Tongue. This is the kind of location you drive six hours to reach and then immediately forgive every kilometre.
The site is small, family-run, and genuinely quiet. Facilities are functional rather than plush: toilets, showers, electric hook-up, and chemical waste disposal cover the basics. A small kitchen area with kettle and toaster is a useful touch. Walkers can head directly onto the hills or along the coast; the Melness shop, post office, and craft shop are a short walk away; and Tongue has hotels with bars and restaurants for when you want a proper dinner.
After dark, the remoteness pays the highest dividend. With almost no light pollution this far north, clear nights deliver a sky most campers in England will not have seen in years. Sunrises over the bay are similarly hard to argue with.
