Mynydd Derwydd Wildcamping
Eighty acres of North Wales mountain farm with a fire pit per pitch and views across to the Berwyn Range and Arenig Fawr -- this is wild camping with permission done properly.
Mynydd Derwydd sits on a family farm above Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr, a hamlet a mile down the track, and from the high pitches the views sweep across to the Berwyn Range and the peak of Arenig Fawr, with Snowdonia National Park twenty minutes by car. Three separate camping grounds spread across 80-plus acres give genuine space between groups: the main High Mountain site holds eight pitches; the smaller sites tuck into different folds of the hill. You do not share a field with strangers here.
The site is deliberately minimal. Toilets are on site and each pitch has its own fire pit -- beyond that, you are expected to bring what you need and take it back with you. That is the trade-off, and it is an honest one: the trade-off is wide open moorland, proper dark skies, and the kind of silence that is harder and harder to find in North Wales. Clocaenog Forest borders the property if you want walking from the gate. The Vale of Clwyd AONB is ten minutes away.
Budget pricing (from £20) and dogs welcome. The access track requires a 4x4 -- this is not a place you arrive in a low-slung hatchback. Worth noting before you book.
Before you book
- 4x4 vehicle required to reach the pitches -- check your vehicle before booking.
- Minimal facilities beyond toilets and fire pits: come fully self-sufficient.
“Genuine permitted wild camping on an 80-acre North Wales hill farm, with fire pits per pitch and mountain views that justify the 4x4 requirement.”
Why it made the cut
- Eighty acres across multiple separated camping grounds means real solitude, not the illusion of it.
- Fire pit at every pitch, included in the budget price -- campfires are the default here, not a premium add-on.
- Views to the Berwyn Range and Arenig Fawr, with Snowdonia twenty minutes away and Clocaenog Forest on the doorstep.
- Owner-run family farm with a website and real host presence -- not a coordinate with a payment link.
