Middleton Top Campsite (Caravan & Camping Club)
A small Derbyshire valley site that sits right at the trailhead for the High Peak Trail, with open views across to Black Rocks and an owner who actually wants to help you make the most of it.
Middleton Top sits at the start of the High Peak Trail on the limestone edge above Matlock, a valley site with uninterrupted views towards Black Rocks, the Heights of Abraham, and Ryber Castle. The site backs directly onto the trail, which means you can be walking or cycling within minutes of putting the tent up. The Pennine Bridleway and Great North Cycleway also begin here, making this an unusually well-positioned base for anyone who came to move their legs.
Owner Richard runs the place with evident care and real local knowledge. He knows the trails, the timing for Matlock Bath, and apparently keeps a spare gas canister for guests who've miscalculated. The facilities are basic but genuinely well-maintained: heated block, hot showers, clean toilets, and hot water for washing up. Wildflowers run along the edges of the pitches. The Rising Sun pub is a two-minute walk to the end of the road. This is a site where the ingredients are simple and the execution is honest.
The site takes tents, caravans, motorhomes, bell tents, and cabins. Pitches are on grass with a gentle slope; campervan users will want ramps. There is no electric hookup at the pitch. Dogs are welcome in some accommodation units. Carsington Water, the River Derwent, local climbing spots, and caving sites at Wirksworth are all within reach, so the appeal extends well beyond the trail-head.
Before you book
- No electric hookup at pitches, campervan and motorhome guests should come prepared.
- Pitches have a slight slope; motorhome and caravan guests will want levelling ramps.
“A proper working base for trail cyclists and walkers who want a characterful valley setting rather than a managed park, owner-run, fairly priced, and better positioned than almost anything else in this part of Derbyshire.”
