Middle Ninfa Farm Bunkhouse
A terraced mountainside farm in the Brecon Beacons where each pitch has its own fire, the Punchbowl lake is a short hike up the hill, and Abergavenny is just two miles below.
Middle Ninfa sits on the flanks of the Blorenge, a 23-acre working farm reached by a steep winding road from Llanfoist that crosses the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal before climbing hard into the national park. The pitches are cut into terraces across the hillside, widely spaced enough that your nearest neighbour is a field away, and the views run out over the Usk Valley to the Skirrid and the broader sweep of rural Monmouthshire beyond.
Hosts Richard and Rohan run the farm with a clear conservation ethic: the site is low-impact in the real sense, with compost loos, filtered natural water, and fire pits built into each pitch rather than bolted on as an extra. Woodland, orchards, and a web of footpaths make the 23 acres worth exploring on foot. The Punchbowl, a small mountain lake tucked near the Blorenge summit, is reachable on a hike from site and is the kind of swimming spot people come back for. The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal is a flat 15-minute walk south for a different kind of afternoon entirely.
Accommodation runs from tent and bivvi pitches to a converted 6-bed barn bunkhouse with a shower, toilet, kitchen facilities, and a stream audible from the sofa bed. It is a cold site by temperament and elevation, but that is part of the character. The Cambrian Way passes nearby for walkers moving through, and Abergavenny's market town, shops, and pubs are two miles down the hill.
Before you book
- Access is via a steep, winding single-track road from Llanfoist, not suited to large outfits or nervous drivers.
- Facilities are genuinely minimal: compost loos and filtered natural water. Bring what you need.
“One of the most honestly off-grid farms in the Brecon Beacons: terraced pitches, a fire per pitch, a mountain lake a hike away, and hosts who clearly care about the place.”

- Fire pit at every pitch, genuinely off-grid facilities, no holiday-park pretence
