Mattiscombe Farm Camping

A hilltop working farm above Start Bay where the view does the talking and the host family makes you feel like a regular on your first visit.

Mattiscombe sits on high ground above the South Devon coast, looking out over Start Bay from open fields that are still, genuinely, a working beef and arable farm. The 29 pitches ring two large fields, which means almost every camper gets an unobstructed line of sight to the sea. This is a back-to-basics site: composting loos, warm showers, fire pits, and the kind of space that lets kids roam without fences.

Ben and the family run the place with obvious pride. Reviewers who return year after year are not returning for the facilities. They are returning because the owner cares about the land, the cows are genuinely friendly, and the welcome is the sort you can feel within five minutes of arriving. The South West Coastal Path is walkable from the gate, with beaches and village pubs reachable on foot or by bike along the National Cycle Network.

Salcombe, Kingsbridge and Dartmouth are all within a 20 to 25 minute drive, so there is no shortage of places to eat and explore. But the site's pitch is simpler than that: a field, a view, a fire, and a family who knows how to run a campsite without turning it into something else.
