Featherbed

A working strawberry farm in rural Northamptonshire where Pete and Isobel have built two quietly extraordinary glamping spots, one with a wood-fired bathtub under open sky.

Featherbed Court sits on nine acres outside the village of Mixbury, near Brackley, and the draw is uncomplicated: private, owner-present, unhurried. Pete and Isobel run a real strawberry farm here, and guests get the run of the grounds alongside it. Hares turn up in the car park. You can pick strawberries from the source.

There are two options. The Hat's Hut is a shepherd's hut with a compact double bed, a well-equipped kitchen, a shower and toilet, and a private garden with a fire pit and a basket of logs included. The Luna Tent is the bolder pitch: a spacious canvas shelter with warm bedding and a wood-fired outdoor bathtub that puts you at eye level with the sunset over the fields. Both are genuinely private; no one is walking past your pitch.

The wider setting is countryside rather than coast or moor, so the scenery isn't the sole reason to come. The reason to come is the intimacy of the place itself: hosts who offer farm tours and mean it, accommodation built around the experience of being somewhere rather than just sleeping somewhere, and a pace that makes it easy to fully stop. Bicester North is 16 minutes by car if you're arriving by train.

Before you book

  • Two units only, so availability is limited at weekends; book well ahead for summer and bank holidays.
A small, owner-led glamping farm with real character and the kind of care that shows in every detail. The wood-fired bathtub at sunset alone justifies the booking.

Why it made the cut

  • Genuinely private accommodation with no shared pitch exposure
  • Hands-on hosts (Pete and Isobel) who give farm tours and treat guests as guests rather than transactions
  • Wood-fired outdoor bathtub on the Luna Tent is a rare, well-executed feature
  • Working strawberry farm gives the site a real identity beyond the glamping kit
