Camping Field
The only campsite on Lundy Island, reached by ferry or helicopter, sitting at the heart of a car-free village in the Bristol Channel.
Lundy is not a campsite destination, it is an island destination where camping happens to be the best way to stay. Forty tent pitches occupy a field at the centre of the island's small village, with the Marisco Tavern a minute's walk away and a village shop for basics. The Landmark Trust, which runs the island, keeps the operation simple and honest: a solid shower block with toilets, sinks, and drinking water, and not much else. That restraint is the point.
Getting here requires planning. The MS Oldenburg ferry runs in summer; in winter the only option is the helicopter. Arrivals are tied to the crossing schedule, which means the campsite operates seasonally around the ferry timetable. The island itself is car-free, so once you're across the water, everything is on foot. Devil's Kitchen beach is within reach and the lighthouse is a long walk along the spine of the island.
This is a tent-only, no-dogs site with a strict no-fires policy given the island's fire risk. It suits couples, solo travellers, and groups who want the logistics to be part of the story rather than an obstacle to it. The Landmark Trust brings its characteristic seriousness of purpose: nothing flashy, nothing unnecessary, a place taken care of by people who care about the place.
Before you book
- Access depends entirely on the MS Oldenburg ferry schedule in summer, or the helicopter service in winter, book crossings well in advance.
- No open fires permitted on the island due to high fire risk.
“Lundy Camping Field earns its reputation through sheer singularity: there is nowhere else in England quite like it, and camping is the right way to experience it.”
