Abbots House Farm Campsite

Back-to-basics farm camping in the North York Moors, with a heritage steam railway running past and some of Yorkshire's best walking trails starting at the gate.

Abbots House Farm sits in Goathland, deep inside the North York Moors National Park, with grass pitches spread across two fields and views across the moor from most of the site. What gives it a character all of its own is the North Yorkshire Moors Railway: the heritage steam service runs alongside the property, and from certain pitches you can watch the trains pass. It is the kind of thing you either find completely charming or don't, and if you do, there's nowhere in the region that does it better.

The walking is serious. The Coast to Coast path, the Cleveland Way, and the Lyke Wake Walk are all accessible from here, and Goathland village is a five to ten minute walk away. Whitby is about twenty minutes by car, with Robin Hood's Bay and Scarborough not far beyond. A farmers market runs at the campsite entrance every Saturday. The night skies are genuinely dark: no light interference, clear views overhead.

Facilities are honest and functional: toilets and showers in a yard near reception, kept clean, with no pretension. There is also a self-catering bunkhouse barn for groups and school trips. This is a budget site by any measure, and it knows what it is. If you arrive expecting manicured hookup bays and a heated amenities block, you've booked the wrong place. If you want a proper moor base with a steam train, serious trails, and a dark sky overhead, this is it.

Before you book

  • Facilities are a walk from the far fields, worth factoring in if you have young children or limited mobility.
  • Pet policy is not confirmed on the site; check with the owner before booking if travelling with a dog.
A working farm site with real character: heritage railway at the fence, dark skies overhead, and North York Moors walking routes in every direction. The facilities are basic and the price reflects that honestly.

Why it made the cut

  • North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs alongside the site, a genuinely distinctive setting signal

  • Group bunkhouse barn makes it a rare find for school trips and large walking parties
